An Evolutionary Analysis of Interleukin-18 Gene

Abstract


Interleukin-18 (IL-18) generally known as interferon gamma inducing factor, plays a central role in inflammation, immune response and as a defense cytokine against infectious agents. The evolutionary analysis of IL-18 protein
was performed in different mammals using the maximum likelihood method. The protein sequences of IL-18 were procured from UniProt public database and multiple sequence alignment was performed with CLUSTAL W with
default parameter. Finally phylogenetic tree was constructed using MEGA 5.2 and the reliability of interior branches was assessed with 1000 bootstrap resamplings. Studies showed divergent evolution of IL-18 gene consequently with species divergence. New world monkey showed highest evolutionary relevance with human IL-18 among different mammals studied.
